Director Peter Berg says the live-action Call of Duty film will be about the human cost of war, not just a string of gunfights. He made the comments in an interview with ComicBook, covered by outlets on October 26, 2026. The film is set to reach theatres on June 30, 2028.
What Berg said
Berg is directing the film for Paramount Pictures and Activision, with Taylor Sheridan attached as writer. According to PC Gamer, Berg told ComicBook that the project is not meant to be a simple “shoot them all up” popcorn movie.
He described the film as having “a very strong soul”, and said it will explore what he calls the consequence of war, which he ties to the idea of duty. GameSpot reported that he still wants the film to reflect the spirit of the games, including the weapons and violence, but with more heart behind it.
Berg also spoke about the characters from the Modern Warfare games. He named Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, and called them complicated people rather than cartoon characters. He said the storylines are nuanced, and described the series as being about the burden carried by soldiers who step between danger and everyone else.
Men’s Journal reported that the comments came during press for Berg’s other war film, The Mosquito Bowl, and that Berg expects the Call of Duty film to be less graphically violent than that one.

What it means for readers
For players, this is a statement of tone from the person making the film. It is not a trailer, a script or a cast list, so treat it as intent rather than a finished result. Two years is a long time before release, and plans can shift.
None of the sources mention Canadian or US release plans beyond the June 30, 2028 theatrical date, and they do not discuss Canadian showtimes, streaming or pricing. That detail will come closer to launch.
If you want to prepare, the Modern Warfare games are the material Berg keeps pointing to, so the characters he named are the ones to watch for.
