ThermoWorks has added the RFX MEAT Mini to its RFX wireless line, a probe 4.0 in long made for small cuts such as filet steaks and salmon portions. The maker’s own page lists it at $79.20 USD, marked down from $99.00, and shows it in stock.
The company, a US maker of food thermometers, sells the Mini alongside the standard RFX MEAT. Engadget reported the launch on October 29, 2026. No Canadian price appears on the ThermoWorks page, so Canadian buyers should treat the figures below as US prices.
What is the RFX MEAT Mini?
It is a shorter version of the RFX MEAT wireless probe, built to fit thin or small pieces of food that a full-length probe would pass straight through. According to the ThermoWorks product page, the key specs are:
- Probe length: 4.0 in, tapering from 0.21 in to 0.11 in in diameter
- Four thermistors, with the probe reading the coldest spot
- External range: 0 to 1,000 °F, internal range: 0 to 212 °F
- Accuracy: ±0.9 °F from 14 to 212 °F
- Waterproofing: IP69K
- Wireless: 433 MHz, up to 1,500 ft line of sight to the RFX GATEWAY
- Battery: up to 48 hours
- Warranty: 1 year on the probe
Engadget wrote that the Mini offers “nearly identical performance to the full-sized grilling probe.” The outlet also noted that the IP69K rating makes the probe dishwasher safe and that the charging block runs on a AAA battery rated for over 175 charges.

How does it differ from the standard RFX MEAT?
The main change is length, and with it the shortest depth the probe can sit in food. Figures from ThermoWorks and Engadget:
| RFX MEAT Mini | RFX MEAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Probe length | 4.0 in | 4.7 in |
| Minimum immersion line (Engadget) | 2.36 in | 3.15 in |
| Battery life | up to 48 hours | 65+ hours |
Engadget gives the Mini’s maximum immersion line as 2.6 inches. The 10 probe charging block works with both lengths, and the Mini can run next to existing RFX MEAT probes.

What else do you need to use it?
You need an RFX GATEWAY, because the probe talks to it over 433 MHz rather than straight to a phone. ThermoWorks says one GATEWAY supports up to 50 RFX probes, and the GATEWAY also works with Billows and the Pro-Series probes. The RFX Starter Kit bundles the GATEWAY, an RFX MEAT probe, a Pro-Series Air Probe, a grate clip, a charging block, a power adapter, a USB cable and probe rings.
How much does it cost in Canada and the US?
The ThermoWorks page shows these US prices in USD, with the compare-at price in brackets:
- RFX MEAT Mini: $79.20 ($99.00)
- RFX GATEWAY: $71.20 ($89.00)
- RFX Starter Kit: $143.20 ($179.00)
- RFX MEAT 10 probe charging block, probes not included: $79.20 ($99.00)
Engadget gave a different picture on launch day: $99 for the Mini, the same as the standard probe at full price, with 20% off when bought together with the RFX GATEWAY or the Starter Kit. The two reports may reflect different promotion terms, so check the final price at checkout.
For Canada, the page lists no CAD price and no shipping details. It does say the RFX system is approved for US (FCC), Canada (IC), EU (CE) and AU/NZ (RCM) only, which means the radio is cleared for use in Canada.

Who it suits
Steak and fish cooks. Filet mignon and salmon portions are the cuts ThermoWorks and Engadget point to, because a 4.0 in probe fits where a longer one does not.
Burger and chicken breast grillers. Thin patties and small pieces are hard to probe with a long stem, and a shorter probe with a 2.36 in minimum immersion line suits them.
Current RFX owners. The Mini works with an existing GATEWAY and the 10 probe charging block, so it is an add on rather than a new system.
Who should wait. Smokers who cook large roasts or long briskets may prefer the standard RFX MEAT, which lists 65+ hours of battery against 48 hours, and Canadian buyers may want to wait for a CAD price.
What is still unknown?
ThermoWorks gives no Canadian price, no Canadian retailer and no shipping terms for Canada, and the product page shows no release date beyond “in stock.” The terms of the 20% bundle discount also differ between the two sources.
Before ordering, check the RFX MEAT Mini page on the ThermoWorks site for the live price and whether the bundle discount applies to your cart.
