BMW has revealed the Concept 7 Protection, an armoured version of its 7 Series luxury sedan that is meant to look and drive almost exactly like the regular car. The BMW Group announced the concept from Munich, and BMWBLOG noted that the reveal came as the Paris Motor Show opened, even though BMW is not taking part in that show.

The idea is to offer certified protection to buyers who face real risks but do not need, or want, the heavy armour of a full high security vehicle. BMW says the concept is aimed at private and corporate customers as well as organisations.

A lighter level of protection, on purpose

BMW already sells two armoured models: the 7 Series Protection, rated VR9 with VPAM 10 as an option, and the X5 Protection VR6. The Concept 7 Protection sits below both. BMW describes the lower scope of protection as a deliberate choice for a different kind of mission rather than a cut corner.

The concept complies with the new BayB standard. According to BMW, it is designed to stop selected common handgun rounds, including 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum, and to deal with risks such as violent attacks, threats while travelling or trips to regions with an uncertain security situation. BMW is clear that anyone who needs blast protection should look at its higher level vehicles.

Here is how the armour is built in:

  • Bulletproof glass that is substantially thicker than on the regular sedan
  • Ballistic steel and fibre reinforced composites inside the doors, covering the gaps between doors, glass and body
  • Extra armour behind the rear triangular windows
  • A protective layer of steel and composites under the panoramic glass roof, whose sunblind stays permanently closed
  • An armoured bulkhead and rear wall

The side windows still move electrically but cannot be fully lowered. An intercom with outside microphones and speakers lets occupants talk to people outside with the doors shut, and an attack alarm sounds and flashes if needed.

Plug-in hybrid power and a rear office

The concept uses the drivetrain of the BMW M760e xDrive. A 3.0-litre six cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor built into the eight speed Steptronic transmission send power to all four wheels. BMW quotes a combined 450 kW/612 hp and 800 Nm of torque. On its own, the engine makes 313 kW/426 hp and the electric motor 145 kW/197 hp.

BMW says the chassis, brakes, drivetrain and driver assistance systems were all retuned for the added weight of the protection, so the car should feel like a standard 7 Series. Neither BMW nor BMWBLOG gave a weight figure.

The rear seat is set up as a quiet workspace. The concept debuts a BMW Individual rear console with a fold down table, a wireless charging tray and a cool box. BMW says that console will be offered on regular 7 Series cars in the second half of 2027.

What it means for you

For most drivers this is a look at a niche, not a car to shop for. It is still a concept, and BMW says the initial focus is on selected European markets. No pricing has been announced, and BMW has not said whether the Concept 7 Protection will come to Canada.

The more practical takeaway is the rear console with its table and charging tray, which BMW plans to make available on everyday 7 Series sedans in 2027. Canadian availability of that option has not been confirmed either. If protection vehicles are relevant to you or your organisation, BMW directs buyers to its special sales division for details.
