BMW has revealed the iX4, an all electric SUV coupe built on its new Neue Klasse platform. The company published full details on October 7. Two versions open for orders first, and a high performance iX4 M60 xDrive follows, with orders starting in January 2027.

Range, power and charging

The iX4 uses BMW’s sixth generation eDrive system, with cylindrical battery cells, 800V technology and bidirectional charging. All versions announced so far have one motor on each axle.

  • iX4 50 xDrive: 345 kW/469 hp, 645 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, top speed 210 km/h, 108.7 kWh usable battery, up to 828 km of WLTP range
  • iX4 40 xDrive: 275 kW/374 hp, 520 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, up to 638 km of WLTP range
  • iX4 M60 xDrive: 450 kW/612 hp, 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, top speed 240 km/h, up to 777 km of WLTP range

The 50 xDrive charges at up to 400 kW. BMW says ten minutes at a suitable fast charger adds up to 387 km of WLTP range. BMW stresses that the M60 figures are provisional.

Design and cabin

The iX4 has a sloping coupe roofline, a long wheelbase and short overhangs. A panoramic sunroof is standard, as is the M Sport package with 20 inch wheels and blue M Sport brake callipers. Wheels up to 22 inches are optional.

Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive brings together BMW Panoramic Vision, a 3D head up display, a 17.9 inch central screen and a new sports steering wheel. The rear seat splits 40:20:40, and a seven speaker, 205 watt sound system is standard. The M60 adds M Sport seats, adaptive M suspension, an electronically controlled rear locking differential and a 13 speaker, 430 watt Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos.

Buyers can pick from nine exterior colours at launch, with three Frozen matte finishes added from March 2027, plus seven interior designs.

Hands free highway driving

BMW’s Motorway Assistant allows hands free driving at up to 130 km/h on approved roads and can help with lane changes. BMW says it will be available in a list of countries by the end of 2026, and that list includes Canada.

What it means for you

The iX4 is aimed at buyers who want an electric BMW SUV with a sportier, coupe style roofline. The range and charging numbers are strong on paper, but keep in mind that they are WLTP figures for the German market. North American ratings are usually lower, and BMW notes that equipment may vary by market.

BMW has not announced Canadian pricing, trims or a delivery date in this release. If you are shopping for an electric SUV in the next year, the iX4 is one to watch, but wait for local pricing and official range ratings before comparing it with rivals.
