Google’s Fitbit Edge, a fitness tracker with a screen that sits between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5, goes on shelves today, October 27. Google announced it on October 12 and opened pre-orders on the Google Store and through retail partners that day.

Price in Canada and the US

Canadian outlets MobileSyrup and iPhone in Canada both report a Canadian price of $229. In the US, Google lists the Fitbit Edge at $179.99, and a Stephen Curry Special Edition at $219.99. Google’s own announcement page does not state a Canadian price, so the Canadian figure comes from those two reports. iPhone in Canada adds that the Stephen Curry edition is also coming to Canada while supplies last.

Every unit comes with three months of Google Health Premium. After that, Tom’s Guide notes the subscription costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year in the US, and the Health Coach features depend on it.

What you get

  • A 1.34-inch always-on AMOLED display, with Google saying it shows 46% more viewing area than earlier Fitbit trackers
  • A body 11.5 mm thin that weighs 17.7 g without the band, rated 5 ATM and IP68
  • Built-in GPS that Google says is up to 40% more accurate, plus an altimeter
  • More than 50 exercise modes and automatic recognition of up to 100 workouts
  • ECG, SpO2, skin temperature and heart rate sensing, with blood pressure and insulin resistance trends through Google Health Guardian features
  • Four finishes: Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon, with bands sold separately

It works with iPhones on iOS 16.4 or later and Android phones on Android 11 or later, through the Google Health app.

Battery and repairs

Google rates the battery at up to 7 days and says about five minutes on the charger gives a day of use. MobileSyrup reports a more cautious split, up to two days with the always-on display and up to seven days without it. iPhone in Canada puts a full charge at about 90 minutes.

Google calls the Edge its first repairable Fitbit, with a replaceable 65 mAh battery. Google also says its battery figures come from tests on pre-production hardware, so real results may be lower.

What it means for you

At $229 in Canada, the Edge costs more than the older Charge line did, as MobileSyrup points out, but well under the $550 starting price MobileSyrup gives for the Pixel Watch 5. It suits people who want a light tracker with a real screen, GPS and health sensors, and who use either an iPhone or an Android phone.

Check two things before buying: the coaching features need the paid Premium plan once the trial ends, and some health features vary by region, so confirm what is switched on in Canada on the Google Store page. Tom’s Guide, after 24 hours with the tracker, said it brings health features it links to the pricier Pixel Watch 5 and praised the new physical side button.
