Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has told investors again that the company’s VR plans are shifting, and the message is not encouraging for anyone waiting on a Meta Quest 4. On Meta’s third quarter earnings call, he said, “I also shared at Connect that we are changing our approach to virtual reality,” GamesRadar reported on October 27. Meta has not announced a Quest 4 or given a date for one.

What Zuckerberg said

According to GamesRadar, Zuckerberg said Meta will pace its VR investment more so it can focus first on what he called personal superintelligence, and that this work is now also the focus of Reality Labs. He told investors he expects the division’s operating loss to fall to about $15 billion next year, with its finances improving from here.

Meta Connect took place last month and introduced VR Glasses. They can play the same games as a Quest 3, though the design is less focused on gaming. Zuckerberg also said the company’s Muse assistant arrives on Meta Glasses next month.

Why Quest 4 hopes are fading

This is not the first sign. At Meta’s fourth quarter earnings call in January, UploadVR reported, chief financial officer Susan Li said Meta was “meaningfully reducing our investment in VR and Horizon” while putting more into wearables. Meta also closed three acquired VR game studios in early January, according to the same report.

UploadVR also described a leaked memo from December. It said an ultralight headset with a tethered puck was delayed to the first half of 2027. It also said a new traditional Quest focused on gaming would not arrive until late 2027 at the earliest, and would no longer be subsidized, so it would cost more. These are reports of internal plans, and Meta has not confirmed them.

The money side points the same way. TechSpot reported that Reality Labs lost $4.6 billion in the second quarter, and about $88 billion since the end of 2020.

What it means for Canadian and US buyers

The sources give no Canadian prices or Canadian availability for these headsets, so check Canadian retailers for current listings.

In practical terms, waiting for a Quest 4 looks like a long wait with no confirmed product at the end of it. GamesRadar also does not expect more exclusive games or bundles after the studio closures.
