Fans trying to keep Mass Effect alive now have a billboard in New York’s Times Square. Game Rant and Destructoid report that the #SaveMassEffect petition is being advertised there, days after EA announced it was closing BioWare and ending work on the next Mass Effect game.
Why fans are campaigning
On October 21, 2026, EA said BioWare is closing and that early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending, according to Video Games Chronicle. VGC, citing Bloomberg, reported that EA is cutting about 400 jobs across the company, roughly 3% of its staff, including about 50 at BioWare.
BioWare made both Mass Effect and Dragon Age, so the news hit hard for players who had been waiting for the next chapter of the sci-fi series.
The petition and the billboard
The #SaveMassEffect petition is hosted on Change.org. Windows Central counted more than 170,000 signatures on October 25, and Destructoid reported over 214,000 and still climbing on October 26. Destructoid says the petition asks EA to recognise how much the series means to players and to let its journey continue.
Two actors who voiced Commander Shepard back the effort: Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer. Meer posted a short message of support on October 24 that read “Hold the line.” Destructoid adds that the developers of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a 2027 game inspired by Mass Effect, also posted in support.
The billboard comes from a fan who goes by Kala Elizabeth. She proposed a fundraiser for it on October 23, and on October 25 she posted “Just bought our first billboard for #SaveMassEffect!”, as quoted by Windows Central. That outlet first described the plan as a billboard near EA’s headquarters in California, while Destructoid and Game Rant place the first one in Times Square. None of the coverage says what it cost or how long it will run. Windows Central says the billboard effort is run separately from the person who started the petition.
What EA has said
None of the coverage we read includes a response from EA to the petition, and the company has not announced plans to bring the series back or hand it to another studio. Windows Central says its sources indicate Microsoft is not going to bid for BioWare or the Mass Effect franchise.
What it means for readers
A petition and a billboard are signals from fans, not decisions by the owner of the franchise, and nothing in the coverage suggests the cancellation has been reversed. Anyone who wants to add a name can do so on the petition’s Change.org page. The sources do not mention Canada or any Canadian angle, and the campaign is run online, so readers in Canada and the United States can follow it the same way.
