God of War Laufey will now launch on PS5 on May 20, 2027, three months later than the February 16, 2027 date Sony had set. Santa Monica Studio announced the change on November 4, 2026, saying the team wants time for “the finishing touches”.
The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by Santa Monica Studio. The studio revealed it in June.
Why was God of War Laufey delayed?
Santa Monica Studio said it made “the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20, 2027”. According to Game Informer, the studio added that it is deeply grateful for fan excitement since the June reveal and will use the extra months to polish the game. Video Games Chronicle reported the same reasoning, that the game needs additional work, and said the studio promised more updates soon.
The studio’s statement was posted on X. The Sony page we could open, the official PS5 page for the game, still carried February 16, 2027 in its body text when we read it, while its release data already listed May 20, 2027. Treat May 20, 2027 as the current date, since outlets including Game Informer, Gematsu and VGC all report it from the studio.
KitGuru pointed out that February 2027 looked crowded, naming Fable, Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis in that window. That is the outlet’s observation, not something Sony said about its reasons.
What is God of War Laufey?
Laufey is the next chapter of the series and, according to VGC, the first mainline God of War to star someone other than Kratos. You play Faye, also called Laufey, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Sony’s page says she wakes in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, after her death and must fight through it to protect Kratos and Atreus.
Game Informer adds that Faye fights monsters and creatures from several mythologies, with a talking gelatinous cube and a talking sword sash among her companions. Here is the key data:

Pre-ordering any edition includes the Last Wish Armor Set, Phranque’s Golden Leaves Appearance and an in-game resource pack, according to the same page. The bonuses come as a download code, and a PlayStation account and an internet connection are required. Sony’s page does not say whether the delay changes pre-order terms, so read the store listing before you buy or cancel.
Who it suits
Pre-order holders. Nothing in the sources says orders are cancelled or repriced. Your game simply arrives on May 20, 2027 instead of in mid February, so keep an eye on the store listing and your email for any notice.
Fans of the Norse God of War games. The story centres on Faye, Kratos’s wife, as the lead, so players who want a new angle on the Norse saga have a clear reason to wait.
Players with a crowded early 2027. If KitGuru’s list of February releases looked like too much, the new date gives the game a quieter slot of its own.
Who should wait. Anyone who has not decided whether a game with a new lead is for them. The studio has promised more updates, and there is time for more footage before May.
What is still unknown?
The sources do not say what the extra work covers, whether other editions or physical extras change, or whether the delay affects pre-order bonuses. Sony’s page lists no price outside the US dollar figures above.
