What the speaker offers

According to the Amazon.ca listing, the PartyBox 720 delivers 800 watts of JBL Pro Sound through two 9 inch woofers, with tweeters handling the highs. A lightshow with stars, trails and strobes moves with the music, and the JBL PartyBox app controls the music, the EQ and the lights.

Battery life is rated at up to 15 hours on a single charge. A 10-minute fast charge adds up to 2 extra hours, and backup batteries are sold separately. The speaker is IPX4 splash proof, has a built-in handle with wider wheels, and takes a USB-C input. Auracast lets you pair two PartyBox 720 speakers for stereo or link other Auracast speakers.

SoundGuys reviewed the speaker and called it “one of the most capable battery-powered party speakers you can buy”. The same review points out that it is big and heavy, at nearly 70 lbs, which matters if you plan to move it often.

What it means for you

This is a speaker for backyard parties, cottage weekends and events where you want a lot of volume and do not mind a large unit. If you only need something to carry around, a smaller JBL speaker is a more practical choice.

Before you buy, check a few things:

  • Make sure the style selector on the Amazon.ca page is set to PartyBox 720, because the same listing also offers the PartyBox 520
  • IPX4 means splash proof, not waterproof, so keep it out of pools and heavy rain
  • Weigh the 15 hours of playtime against how long your event runs, and think about whether you need the separately sold backup batteries
  • Compare the price with ca.jbl.com on the day you buy, since both stores can change prices without notice

The comparison here is with JBL’s own list price, not with a store’s crossed out price. Amazon.ca also shows $1,499.98 as the list price, and it matches what JBL shows.
