The METRO Redux Next-Gen Update is out now on Xbox Series X|S, and the update itself is free. It covers both METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux, and gives each game a choice of true 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps, according to Xbox Wire.

The announcement was published on October 29, 2026 by John Bloch, franchise executive producer at 4A Games. It lands ahead of METRO 2039, which launches on February 4, 2027.

What changes on Xbox Series X|S?

The headline gains are in performance and image quality. After you download and apply the update, each game offers two modes:

  • True 4K at 60fps
  • Upscaled 4K at 120fps, which needs a display that supports it

4A TSR Upscaling and Antialiasing support is meant to sharpen the picture further. Xbox Wire also lists more detailed textures, a refined lighting and shadow system, richer environmental detail and better animation fidelity.

4A Games says each change was tuned to keep the look and feel of the originals. Pure Xbox reported that the team does not call this a remaster or a remake.

What about the controller and handhelds?

The update adds full support for the Xbox controller’s Impulse Triggers, so the triggers give tactile feedback during play. Xbox Wire says Xbox Ally and Ally X owners get full support and optimisation.

Xbox Play Anywhere is also part of the update, which is meant to let players pick the games up on more than one device. Pure Xbox adds that Spatial Audio and a Power Optimized Mode are included on Xbox.

Which other platforms get it?

Xbox Wire only covers Xbox. Pure Xbox and GamingOnLinux both reported earlier that the same upgrade is planned for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and PC, with platform-specific features such as PSSR on PS5 Pro and DLSS on PC. Check each store listing for the date on your platform.

What does it cost in Canada and the US?

The update is free. Pure Xbox says it is free for all existing owners of both games, and Xbox Wire calls it a free update.

The announcement does not state a Canadian or US price for the games themselves, and it does not mention Canada at all. If you do not own the games yet, check the price on your own Xbox store before buying, since it can differ by region and change at any time.

Who does it suit?

Returning players. If you finished the games on an older console, this is a reason to go back. The same campaigns look sharper and run smoother, and the Impulse Triggers add a tactile layer. Because 4A Games says it kept the original feel, you should not expect changed levels or story.

Newcomers before METRO 2039. More than 50 million players have explored the series since the first game launched in 2010, according to Xbox Wire. With METRO 2039 due on February 4, 2027, these two games are an easy way to catch up on the setting. METRO 2033 and Last Light are stealth-action games set in the Moscow Metro.

Owners of a 120Hz TV or monitor. The upscaled 4K at 120fps mode only helps if your display supports it. Without one, the true 4K at 60fps mode is the sensible choice.

Handheld and travel players. Xbox Ally and Ally X owners get optimisation, and Xbox Play Anywhere means the games can follow you between devices.

What is still unknown?

Xbox Wire does not list a file size, a full patch notes page or any change to the games’ prices. Pure Xbox noted that more platform details would come closer to launch, and the announcement does not say whether physical copies qualify. It also does not say how the 120fps mode behaves on every display.
