DumbLevel, an iPhone bubble level that also works out where to put the nails for pictures and shelves, is free to download on the App Store. New Mobile Life reports that the app normally costs US $0.99 and describes the free price as a limited time offer. The App Store listing, published by developer kert shuster, shows the app as Free, and the developer’s own website says the same.

What is free, and for how long

The app is free to download on iPhone. Neither the listing nor the developer’s site gives an end date for the free price, and neither mentions a normal price. The US $0.99 figure and the “limited time” description come only from New Mobile Life, so treat the end date as not stated.

The developer’s pages describe the app as free with no ads, no subscription, no account and no analytics, and they say nothing leaves the phone. Whether the price will change later is not addressed. The sources do not give any Canadian pricing; the US $0.99 figure is a US dollar price.

What the app does

According to the listing, DumbLevel chooses its mode from how the phone is held: on its long edge for a level line, upright for plumb, flat for a two-axis bubble. It reads to a tenth of a degree, shows green, amber or red, and says in words which end is high. A Hold button freezes the reading, and pings that speed up and a chime at level let you watch the shelf instead of the screen.

A calibration step has you capture a reading, turn the phone end for end on the same spot and capture again, so the phone’s own sensor error can be subtracted.

The planner asks what you are hanging: one picture, a row or grid of frames, shelves, hooks or a curtain rod. It fills in common rules of thumb, which you can change, then lists each mark in inches from the end of the wall or edge of the window, with a to-scale drawing. Sheets can be printed or shared as a PDF, and finished jobs are kept under Past projects.

How to get it

  1. On an iPhone, open the DumbLevel listing on the App Store, which the developer’s site also links to.
  2. Check that the price shows Free, then tap Get.

The app needs iOS 17.0 or later and is iPhone only and portrait only.

What it means for readers

This suits anyone hanging frames, mounting shelves or fitting a curtain rod who wants a quick level and a measuring plan without paying. The developer is plain about the limits: like every phone level, it is only as good as the phone’s sensor, so calibrate it first and check anything that matters with a real level. It does not work with the screen off. The listing had just one rating at the time of writing, so there is little user feedback yet. Always download from the official App Store listing.
