Xbox has started testing a way to stream games from the cloud without a Game Pass subscription: you buy hours of playtime instead. Xbox Wire said on October 21, 2026 that Cloud Playtime is available to test with XBOX Insiders, and that the option will roll out more broadly in November.

Prices and packs

Xbox lists introductory pricing for three packs:

  • 10 hours for $3.99
  • 25 hours for $7.99
  • 50 hours for $11.99

According to Xbox, the packs are ad free, with shorter wait times and high quality streaming, and any unused time stays available until you use it. Shacknews reports the prices as US dollars, and Thurrott says the introductory pricing will likely change. Xbox Wire does not name regions, so Canadian pricing and availability have not been announced.

Who can test it

The preview is for XBOX Insiders who do not have an active Game Pass subscription. To join, install the XBOX Insider Hub on an Xbox Series X|S, an Xbox One or a Windows PC. You also need a supported device for streaming.

Xbox ties eligible games to a cloud playable game purchase requirement, with free to play access for select titles. The company also warns that availability, purchasing options, eligible games and features may vary by market, device, account eligibility and preview ring.

How it fits with Game Pass

Cloud Playtime is one of several cloud options Xbox is trying. Insiders can already stream for free with ads, a test announced on July 23, 2026, and Thurrott says those free sessions are capped at one hour.

Thurrott also reports that from November, Game Pass tiers will carry monthly cloud hour limits: 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium and 15 hours for Ultimate. Members who want more can buy extra hours on the Microsoft Store.

What it means for readers

For now this is a test, and only Insiders can buy the packs. If you play on the cloud only now and then, the model gives you a way to pay for just the hours you use instead of a monthly plan, but the final prices may differ from the introductory ones.

Canadian players should watch for November. Xbox has not said whether Canada is included, or what the packs would cost in Canadian dollars, so check Xbox Wire and the Microsoft Store when the wider rollout begins.
