Uttra, a speech to text app for the Mac that works fully offline, is free on the Mac App Store for a limited time. The listing says the app is “Free until the end of October.” The tip site New Mobile Life reports that it normally costs US$6.99.
Uttra is built for anyone who wants to type less, and the developer says it is especially useful for people who find a keyboard slow, difficult or tiring to use. It runs on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later.
How it works
You hold Option and Space to talk and let go to finish, or press Control, Shift and Space once to start and again to stop. Uttra then cleans up the text and copies it to your clipboard, ready to paste. An optional mode pastes the text straight into the field you are typing in.
- Speech is processed on your Mac with the bundled Parakeet TDT v3 model, so nothing needs to download first
- Optional Whisper Large v3 Turbo and Whisper Large v3 engines can be added; each is roughly 630 MB
- Dictate in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese
- Automatic punctuation, capitals and spacing, plus removal of filler words and false starts
- Voice Modes, saved text Templates and a personal vocabulary for names and jargon
Privacy
The developer says transcription and cleanup happen locally on every engine, and that the only network use is downloading an optional model when you ask for one. There is no account, upload, analytics or advertising, and history is off by default. The app also states that its cleanup uses fixed rules, not a generative model, so it does not rewrite what you said.

- Check that the price shows as free before you tap Get.
- Once installed, the app stays yours under your Apple Account.
