Drowsmith, an iPhone and iPad app for building your own calming soundscapes, is listed as Free on the App Store, and the tip site New Mobile Life puts its regular price at US $0.99. The store page says it is free for a limited time and does not give an end date, so the offer can end without notice.

What is free, and who can get it?

The app is a Music category release from developer Chebrolu Muralikrishna. It is 196.1 MB, rated 13+, and requires iOS 17.0 or later on iPhone, or iPadOS 17.0 or later on iPad. The page says the app has no ads or subscriptions, no account and no tracking. The listing is in English only.

The tip article calls it a limited time offer on a US $0.99 app. Neither source says which countries the free price covers, and neither names a date when it stops. If the App Store shows a price when you open the listing, the offer is over for you.

What can you do with it?

Drowsmith is described as a personal soundscape studio for winding down in the evening. According to the App Store description, you can:

  • Blend rain, ocean waves, wind, rustling leaves, fireplace sounds, a fan, and white, pink or brown noise
  • Add gentle musical textures and adjust each layer’s volume, warmth and stereo position
  • Play a ready made mix, or build your own with up to 12 sound layers
  • Save favorite combinations in a personal library
  • Record a sound around you, or import an audio file to use in a mix
  • Keep listening with the screen locked and control playback from the Lock Screen
  • Set a sleep timer of 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, with a gentle fade during the last five minutes

The latest version listed, 1.0.2, improved audio playback reliability when you lock the screen or switch away from the app. The first release added Siri support for saved mixes and built in presets, with pause and resume, and the ability to play sounds straight from the Library.

What about privacy and offline use?

The developer says built in sounds and mixing work offline. Your recordings, imported sounds and saved mixes stay on your device, according to the listing. In the App Privacy section, the developer states that it does not collect any data from the app. Apple notes that this information comes from the developer and has not been verified by Apple.

What is the catch?

The store page does not describe any in app purchases in the text we reviewed, and it lists no price beyond Free. The main limits are the time window, which is unknown, and the app’s own disclaimer. The developer says Drowsmith is a creative relaxation tool and is not intended to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. Apple’s listing also flags infrequent medical or treatment information and health or wellness topics, alongside its 13+ age rating.

The app is also fairly large for a utility, so check your free storage before you download it.

How do you get it?

  1. Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17.0 or iPadOS 17.0 or later.
  2. Search for Drowsmith by Chebrolu Muralikrishna, or open the official listing linked from this story.
  3. Confirm that the button shows Get and the price reads Free, then download it with your Apple Account.
  4. Open the app, pick a ready made mix or start building your own, and set a sleep timer.

Who is it for?

It suits people who like to fall asleep to a custom blend of rain, fireplace crackle or a steady fan, and who want it to work without a connection, an account or ads. If you only need one steady sound, the built in presets may be enough. If you want to layer a recording of your own room into a mix, the import and record features are the reason to download it.

Next step: open the official App Store listing for Drowsmith, check that the price still reads Free, and download it before the offer ends. Prices can change at any time.
