Nier: Automata on Steam now asks for 366GB of disk space, up from about 50GB, after a small update that was meant to add languages. GamesRadar says Steam requested 366GB when its writer reinstalled the game, and Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reports the same jump.

Neither Square Enix nor PlatinumGames has explained the change. The Steam store page still lists the old requirement, so many players only find out after they hit the install button.

What exactly changed?

The reports agree on the main points:

  • The install size rose from 50GB to 366GB on PC through Steam
  • The update added Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean language support
  • The patch itself is about 8GB, according to players in the Steam discussions that GamesRadar cites
  • The store page still shows “50 GB available space” in its system requirements, per GamesRadar
  • RPG Site tested the issue and confirmed the 366GB figure, according to VGC
  • The larger requirement only appears once you start installing after purchase, VGC says, which is why it is easy to miss

Why did the game get so much bigger?

No official reason has been given. The patch notes do not mention new content, and GamesRadar says early analysis suggests the game is otherwise unchanged.

VGC reports that a bug seems to have added the size of the full game to each piece of DLC. Installing the base game and every add-on would then add up to 366GB. GamesRadar notes that players are guessing at a similar duplication, but this remains an explanation from users and reporters, not from the publisher.

VGC adds that it first suspected a typo in the reported number, until testing showed the larger requirement was real. GamesRadar found no official comment from the companies behind the game when it published, and treats the cause as unknown.

Is there a fix yet?

Not an official one. VGC says some players report the size is back to normal on their end while others still see the inflated number, and it expects a hotfix soon. No timeline has been announced by Square Enix or PlatinumGames.

Negative reviews have already appeared from players who cannot install the game because of the storage demand, VGC reports.

How much does it cost?

The sources do not give a price for Nier: Automata on Steam, so there is nothing to compare here. The relevant figure is storage, not money. Check the Steam store page for the price in your own region and currency, and remember that its listed 50GB requirement does not match what the installer is asking for right now.

Who it suits

Players who already have the game installed. VGC advises holding off on the update until a fix arrives. If you cannot roll back, it suggests turning off Steam auto-updates so the larger download does not start by itself.

Anyone planning to buy. Waiting a few days looks sensible, since the reported size is far beyond the listed requirement and a hotfix is expected. Check free space before you commit.

Players with small drives. 366GB is more than many laptops and compact desktops can spare, so a full install with every add-on may simply not fit until the problem is corrected.

Chinese and Korean language players. The language support is the real purpose of the update. It is a welcome addition, even if the size bug has overshadowed it.

What is still unknown?

Square Enix and PlatinumGames have not confirmed the cause, whether the 366GB figure is a bug, or when a fix will arrive. It is also unclear whether every player sees the same number, since reports differ on whether the problem has cleared for some users.

Your next step: before you install or update, check the Steam community hub for Nier: Automata and the publisher’s support channels for a hotfix notice, and look at the size shown in the install dialog before confirming.
