World of Warcraft: Forever will ship with official controller support on PC, labelled Gamepad (Alpha), when it launches on November 4, 2026. Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson detailed how it plays in a November 2 post, and says it also runs on a Windows handheld with some effort.

Forever is a version of Azeroth close to the game that arrived in 2004, with new stories and places added. Blizzard says the Forever experience is included in an active subscription, so no extra purchase is needed to play it.

What is World of Warcraft: Forever?

It returns players to the two classic continents, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, with the classic races. According to Xbox Wire, it adds the Skyborne, a new race of elves from the floating Zephras Isle, plus new areas in the Riverglades and Mount Hyjal.

  • Platform at launch: PC
  • Launch date: November 4, 2026
  • New race: the Skyborne
  • Combo changes: for example, a Forsaken Paladin
  • Included with your current subscription, per Xbox Wire

How does Gamepad (Alpha) support work?

You turn it on from the main menu: open Options and tick the box for Gamepad (Alpha). On-screen icons then change to match your controller buttons.

  • Combat cycles through actions tied to the Triggers and Bumpers
  • A ping system, tied to holding the right analog stick, sends commands such as Attack, Warning, On My Way and Assist
  • A Compact Action Bar option frees up screen space
  • Nelson recommends a modern Xbox Wireless Controller, because every on-screen icon maps to it

Nelson says he found nothing he could not reach with the controller alone, including bags, quests and the character screen. He also says combat in Forever feels more rhythmic than modern Warcraft, which gives you more time to think about your next move. The feature carries an Alpha label, so expect changes.

Can you play it on a handheld?

Xbox Wire says it worked on an ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, which runs Windows 11 and can run the Battle.net app. This setup is not officially supported yet.

Getting there takes patience. Nelson used the touchscreen and the on-screen keyboard to reach the main menu and switch Gamepad (Alpha) on. He then opened the UI Edit Mode, shrank the Chat Frame and moved the Player and Targeting Frames lower on the screen.

Is it only for PC?

According to Vice, there are currently no official plans to release World of Warcraft: Forever on other platforms. Vice also calls full gamepad support a likely prerequisite for a future Xbox release, but that is its own speculation and not an announcement.

Prices

No price for the controller support is listed, and none is needed beyond the subscription. Xbox Wire says Forever is included in a current World of Warcraft subscription. Blizzard’s European news page says it is included with an active subscription or game time. Blizzard also sells launch packs: its Epic pack includes 30 days of game time from 4 November. No prices appear in the sources we read, so check Blizzard’s store for your country and currency.

Who it suits

Couch players. If your PC sits near the living room TV, Gamepad (Alpha) lets you adventure from a sofa. Nelson still keeps a wireless keyboard close.

Handheld owners. A Windows handheld can run Forever, but the setup is manual and unofficial for now. Patient tinkerers will manage it. Anyone wanting a one click experience should wait.

Casual and lore fans. Nelson describes his own play as relaxed, chasing story and lore. The slower combat rhythm he describes suits that pace.

Group players. Dungeon runs need talking. Nelson says a keyboard or voice chat still feels like the way to go, since the ping system covers only a few commands.

What is still unknown?

The sources do not say when Gamepad (Alpha) will leave alpha, or what changes before then. No console release is announced, and no handheld is officially supported. Vice notes that the controller build at BlizzCon could only be tested in a limited early area, so the full dungeon experience on a gamepad was not shown there.

What to do next

If you play on PC, open Options on November 4 and try the Gamepad (Alpha) box with an Xbox Wireless Controller. Read Blizzard’s news page for the launch pack contents in your region, and the Xbox Wire post for the handheld UI tips.
