Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, the remake of Nihon Falcom’s classic role-playing game, is on sale at Amazon in the United States. The PlayStation 5 version is listed at $39.99, according to IGN’s deals roundup, against the $59.99 price publisher GungHo Online Entertainment America set for the physical Standard Edition in North America.

IGN listed it as 33% off. Prices are as reported at the time of writing. No end date has been given, so the price can change at any time.

What the game is

The original Trails in the Sky came out in 2004 for PC and reached the PSP in 2006. This new version rebuilds the first part of the story for modern systems, and it is published in the West by GungHo, with Nihon Falcom as developer. It is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Steam.

The story is set in the Liberl Kingdom. It follows Estelle Bright and her adoptive brother Joshua as they train to become senior bracers, and a simple job grows into a fight against a mysterious organization threatening their homeland, according to GungHo.

GungHo highlights:

  • A new English localization that aims to stay close to the original Japanese text
  • Text in English, German, French or Spanish
  • A new English voice cast, with a Japanese voice option

Why now

IGN noted that this is the first entry in the long running Trails series, and that the follow-up, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, is already out. That makes this a good moment to start the story before moving on to the sequel.

The game suits players who enjoy long, character-driven fantasy RPGs with plenty of dialogue. If you want short sessions or nonstop action, it may feel slow. Fans who finished the original years ago should know this is a remake of the same story, not a new chapter.

What to check before buying

  • Make sure the listing says PlayStation 5. The Switch version is a separate product with its own price.
  • The deal is on the copy sold by Amazon in the US. Other countries and other sellers may differ. In Europe, GungHo lists the Standard Edition at 59.99 EUR through its partner Clear River Games.
  • If you plan to play both parts, check the price of 2nd Chapter on its own page, since it is not part of this offer.
