The Coway Airmega 200M, a compact HEPA air purifier made for bedrooms, is $161.00 at Amazon in the United States at the time of writing. The White model is shipped and sold by Amazon, and the listing shows no end date, so the price can change at any time.

Coway’s official US store lists the same purifier, model AP-1518R, at a regular price of $229.99. When we checked, both colours showed as sold out or unavailable on Coway’s own store, which makes Amazon the easier place to find it right now.

What you get

Coway rates the 200M for rooms up to 361 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour, the figure that matters most for allergy sufferers. For lighter use, Coway quotes 874 ft² at two air changes per hour and 1,748 ft² at one.

Air goes through a pre-filter, a deodorization filter for odours and a HEPA filter, plus what Coway calls its Vital Ion System, a bipolar ionizer. Coway lists clean air delivery rates of 246 for smoke, 249 for dust and 277 for pollen.

Day to day, it is a set and forget machine:

  • Auto mode reads the air and adjusts the fan on its own
  • Eco mode switches the fan off after 30 minutes of clean air and restarts it when pollution returns
  • A timer for one, four or eight hours
  • A filter indicator, and an air quality light you can switch off at night

Coway lists the noise level at 24.4 to 55.1 dB(A) and power use at 82 W. The unit measures 16.8 x 18.3 x 9.6 inches and weighs 12.3 lbs.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

It suits a bedroom, a nursery or a home office, especially for people with pollen or pet dander allergies who want a quiet machine that runs on its own.

Skip it for a large open plan living room: at 361 square feet its rated coverage for frequent air changes is modest, and a bigger purifier will do the job with less noise. Also skip it if you want phone control, since the 200M has no app.

What to check before buying

Check that the listing says 200M and that the seller is Amazon.com, since third party sellers also list this model. Budget for filters: Coway rates the deodorization filter for 6 months and the HEPA filter for 12 months. The ionizer can be turned off if you prefer not to use it.
