Capcom has released the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on the Nintendo eShop for Switch 2. The demo is a free download, and progress made in it moves over to the full game, which launches on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. Digital pre-orders opened at the same time as the demo.

What the demo includes

According to Capcom, the demo covers the full opening of Monster Hunter Wilds, including the character creator where you design your Hunter and Palico partner. You also get to take on monsters in the Windward Plains. RPG Site reports that it includes every weapon type and story content up to Chapter 1-3, To the Forest.

The main points:

  • Free download on the Nintendo eShop for Switch 2
  • Save data carries over to the full release
  • Local wireless multiplayer with other Switch 2 owners
  • No online multiplayer in the demo
  • Around 12.8GB of free space needed, according to Nintendo Life

The full Switch 2 version

The Nintendo eShop listing gives a release date of December 4, 2026 and an estimated file size of 39.1 GB. It supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes, with up to four players over local wireless or online play.

Capcom says the Switch 2 version will arrive with all the title update content released so far. That includes the Grand Hub, extra monsters such as Mizutsune, Lagiacrus, Seregios and the elder dragon Gogmazios, and the Final Fantasy XIV Online collaboration. The full game also supports cross-play, so Switch 2 players can hunt online with people on other platforms.

Players who pre-order the digital version by December 3 get an early adopter discount, plus the Guild Knight layered armour set and the Hope Charm talisman, according to Capcom. A physical Deluxe Edition with Deluxe Pack cosmetic items is also up for pre-order at retailers, and Nintendo Life notes that a Game-Key Card release has been confirmed.

Monster Hunter Wilds first launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. A large expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, is planned for 2027 on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

What it means for you

If you own a Switch 2 and have been curious about Wilds, the demo is an easy way to see how the game looks and plays on the console before December. Because your progress transfers, the time you spend building a character and clearing the early story is not lost.

If you want to hunt with friends online, keep in mind that the demo only supports local play. Online multiplayer and cross-play come with the full game. Check your free storage before downloading, since the full game needs much more space than the demo.

If you are deciding between formats, the digital pre-order carries the early adopter discount and bonus items, while the physical Deluxe Edition adds the Deluxe Pack cosmetics. Prices vary by region, so check the eShop or your retailer for the current offer where you live.
