What the oven does

The Smart Oven Air Fryer Compact is a countertop convection oven that also air fries. According to Breville Canada, it has 10 smart functions: 5 air fry modes and 5 oven functions (Toast, Bagel, Pizza, Broil, and Bake and Roast). Highlights from Breville’s page:

  • Air fry modes use super convection, which Breville says can cut cooking time by up to 30%
  • A Crispy Reheat mode for leftovers
  • Element iQ, which steers power to separate heating elements as needed
  • An “A Bit More” button for extra browning
  • Room for a whole 4.5lb chicken, 1lb of French fries, an 11inch pizza or 4 slices of toast

The box includes a broiling rack, roasting pan, air fry basket and reversible oven rack. Breville also offers its Breville+ app with guided recipes, free when you register the oven.

Who it suits

This is a good fit for small households, apartments and anyone who wants one appliance to replace both a toaster and a basket air fryer. BestReviews, in a buying guide published by KTLA, picked it as the best Breville air fryer oven for small kitchens.

Skip it if you regularly cook for a large family or want to roast big cuts, since a full size Breville oven or a regular wall oven will hold more. If you only need fries and wings, a basic basket air fryer costs less.

Before you buy

Measure your counter: Breville lists the oven at 9.96 x 15.67 x 16.93in (253 x 398 x 430mm), and convection ovens need some clearance around them. Check that the model number matches BOV680BSS1BUC1, since Breville sells several Smart Oven models with similar names, including larger air fryer versions.
